Confirmed: Disney World Permanently Ending Guest Perk Tomorrow
Ever earned a digital achievement in the Play Disney Parks app? Today is your last chance to look at it.
Sounds small, and for most guests it is. But there is a specific kind of Disney fan who has been collecting these for years. Checking off Fab 50 statues across Walt Disney World. Hacking door panels in Batuu. Building a progress log that represents dozens of park days.
All of it sits behind a login that stops working in under 24 hours.
Disney announced this a month ago. Most people had time to prepare. Most people also forgot, because a shutdown a month out does not feel urgent until it does.
It is urgent now.
Play Disney Parks permanently retires September 16, 2026. That is tomorrow.
What Happens
The app comes out of app stores, and users can no longer log in.
That second part is what matters. This is not a case where the app stays on your phone and quietly stops updating. Login goes, progress goes with it.
Want to keep anything? Open the app and capture it today. Screenshots are the only option. There is no export function.
After eight years, that is the cutoff.
What Disappears for Good
The biggest loss is Star Wars: Datapad.
Disney introduced it with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in August 2019, turning a guest’s phone into an in-universe device on Batuu.
It let guests:
- Hack door panels around the land
- Scan cargo crates
- Translate the Aurebesh on signage
- Interact with screens and physical elements throughout Galaxy’s Edge
When Rise of the Resistance opened later that year, Disney expanded the Datapad with two more experiences tied to that attraction.
All of it retires tomorrow. No replacement announced.
Guests visiting Galaxy’s Edge after tomorrow will have fewer ways to interact with the land than at any point since 2019. For a land built on the premise that you are a traveler on Batuu rather than a tourist in Florida, that stings.
What Survives
Not everything goes, and the distinction matters.
Batuu Bounty Hunters stays. It runs on MagicBand+ and screens throughout Galaxy’s Edge. The app component dies tomorrow, the rest keeps working.
MagicBand+ interactions continue too, including with the Fab 50 statues at Walt Disney World.
So tapping Fab 50 statues with a MagicBand+ still works. What ends is the Disney Fab 50 Quest inside the app, which tracked every statue you had hit.
The interaction survives. The scorecard does not.
The DuckTales Situation
DuckTales World Showcase Adventure is unresolved.
The EPCOT experience has been down for weeks for refurbishment, and asked about its future alongside the app retirement, Disney said there is no information to share at this time.
That is genuinely ambiguous.
Disney has not confirmed a permanent closure. Disney also has not explained how it would run without the app that powers it.
Do not assume tomorrow ends DuckTales World Showcase Adventure. There is no confirmed answer, and anyone claiming one is guessing.
What This App Was
Worth remembering the ambition here.
Announced April 2018, launched June 28, 2018, alongside Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The original lineup had queue games for Toy Story Mania, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, and Slinky Dog Dash, plus trivia and achievements.
Disney kept building through 2018 and 2019. Activities at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and Animal Kingdom. Sponsored games near what used to be Splash Mountain and EPCOT’s Kidcot locations. For a while, guests could even convert certain digital achievements into physical collectible pins.
The premise was that a phone could be part of the attraction instead of a distraction competing with it.
Why It Is Ending
Updates slowed after 2020 as Disney shifted toward My Disney Experience.
That app now runs most of a Walt Disney World trip. Wait times, maps, dining, mobile order, Lightning Lane, resort check-in.
Play Disney Parks became a separate platform sitting outside the main ecosystem, and separate platforms cost money to maintain for features most guests never opened.
There is also a tension worth naming. Disney has acknowledged that phone use in the parks has gotten excessive. An app built entirely around staring at your phone in a themed queue does not sit comfortably next to that.
Do This Today
Screenshot your achievements if they matter. There is no other way.
Do not delete the app planning to reinstall. It leaves app stores tomorrow.
In a park today? Last chance to use the Datapad in Galaxy’s Edge.
Never used it? That is fine. This was always niche, deeply loved by a small group and ignored by everyone else.
Tomorrow it goes quiet after eight years.
