Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween lineup is out, and for a lot of families, Disney fans or not, that list is the October calendar.
It is where Hocus Pocus lives. Where The Nightmare Before Christmas runs on a loop. Where a whole generation found Halloweentown. The lineup drops, people screenshot it, and October gets planned.
This year, there is a new title, and it arrives with an argument attached.
Coven Academy premieres October 1 on Freeform as part of day one, with the full season landing October 2 on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on Demand.
The premise fits the season perfectly. But before a single episode airs, an advocacy group has called for a boycott.
The Show
Set inside a secret school in New Orleans.
It follows young witches and warlocks as they learn to control new powers while a mysterious force closes in. Disney describes the world as one of supernatural wars, forbidden love interests, and dangerous desires.
Rated PG-V.
New Orleans is well-traveled ground for this genre. A magic boarding school there puts Coven Academy in a line that runs through The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and a long history of Southern gothic aimed at teens.
October release, obviously. This is Halloween programming built as Halloween programming.
The Objection
One Million Moms published an alert in August urging parents to skip the series.
Their argument: Disney is pushing witchcraft on families, especially tweens and teens, and continues to embrace witches, warlocks, and sorcery while promoting what the group calls secular worldviews to young viewers.
The alert calls Coven Academy a teen drama or teen soap opera and describes the trailer as featuring teenagers with anger issues, witch sisterhood, teen romance, and vampires. It also objects to the teaser’s use of “Brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo, citing the artist’s public support for Planned Parenthood.
The position is explicitly religious. The alert cites Isaiah 8:19-22 and Deuteronomy 18:10-11, passages the group reads as warnings against witchcraft in any form.
They are asking supporters to sign a pledge not to support Disney or the show, then share the alert by email and social media.
The Other Side
The counterargument comes down to precedent.
Disney has been making content about witches for decades. Hocus Pocus is an October staple in an enormous number of homes, including plenty of religious ones. Wizards of Waverly Place ran four seasons on Disney Channel and got a sequel series. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is from 1971. The Sword in the Stone was released in 1963.
Parents who are not worried tend to make the same point. These are understood as fantasy, the same way a kid watching a dragon does not conclude dragons exist.
There is a practical angle, too. Coven Academy is rated PG-V and marketed openly as a supernatural teen drama. Nothing is hidden. Any parent who does not want their kid watching a show about witches has everything they need before pressing play.
Where Parents Are Landing
Most responses have not been agreement or dismissal. There have been some versions of “use your own judgment.”
Which is fair. Parents draw lines in different places, and a line that works in one house does not transfer to another. Plenty of strict households still had Hocus Pocus on every October. Plenty of others have specific rules about supernatural content.
Both are legitimate.
The suggestion that keeps coming up is to wait. It premieres on October 1 on Freeform and on October 2 on streaming. Watch an episode and decide from there, rather than from a trailer or an alert.
Why It Is Always Disney
Disney sits in an odd spot in these fights.
The company produces everything from preschool shows to prestige adult drama, and all of it carries one name. A Freeform teen drama targets a completely different audience than a Disney Junior series, but both get filed under Disney.
That makes the company a recurring target for organized campaigns in a way that other networks producing similar content usually are not. Freeform has always programmed older than Disney Channel, and 31 Nights of Halloween has carried plenty of PG-13 and horror-adjacent titles over the years.
None of that settles the disagreement, which is about values rather than facts. It does explain why this fight keeps repeating.

The hypocrisy is incredible! These religious zealots preach that Disney’s forcing the supernatural on kids and families. All the while they force their religious beliefs on everyone. Religion, regardless of your faith, is forced on children. The child doesn’t have a choice. All religions are based in fiction, violence, magic and a form of brainwashing.

This is what Jesus spoke of, while giving the sermon on the mount: The Hypocrites’ Motive: Jesus explains that hypocrites love to stand and pray in synagogues and on busy street corners to gain human approval and look devout.
The Secret Place: Instead of performative display, Jesus instructs, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen”. God, who sees what is done in secret, will reward that authentic devotion.
Call it for what it is and leave religion out of it..a bunch of supposedly mature adults with mature minds who are normalizing dangerous ideology on younger impressionable minds and witchcraft has always been linked to the devil and evil and God is against it. Therefore, if God says its bad for us, the human race He created, then we are to listen as He knows what is good for us. Thats it. Anything else is rebellion, which God says interestingly the sin of withcraft.

However, youre incorrect about Christianity being forced on any children. I know kids, who grew up in church, but decided as an adult to not want anything to do with it. That is their choice. Since you seem to know some of the Bible, Do you know that Bible also instructed parents to teach their kids about God’s way in both the old and new testament?( Deuteronomy 6:6-7) (Ephesians 6:2-3) The Bible also clearly says witchcraft is fleshly and the flesh doesn’t agree with the Spirit(Galatians chapter 5). Also, isnt it a parents right to raise their kids how they want? Why exactly do you care what shows other people are letting their kids watch? Kindly explain how that affects you. By the way I’m not surprised youre trashing these complete strangers, who are not affecting you in any way. Jesus did predict good things would be called evil some day.
